Gone are those days when the northeast India
was being overlooked and was treated with a step motherly attitude. The centre
has now started giving rights and importance to the region and many recent
developmental plans concerning northeast is a bright instance of that. Now, the
Union minister Nitin Gadkari, while his visit to Guwahati, on Tuesday, has
announced that as a part of efforts to strengthen infrastructure development in
the northeast, two new national highways will be constructed in the region connecting
Tripura with Assam.
Union road transport, highways and shipping
minister Nitin Gadkari said, "The state government has long been demanding
for construction of two new national highways - one from Sabroom to Kukital in
Assam and the other is from Khowai sub-division to Agartala. These highways
would be constructed under 'Bharatmala' and works would be started before
December this year. The total expenditure would be Rs 801.79 crore."
The Union Minister was also on a visit to
Tripura for laying the foundation of the double laning of a 55-km long road
from Agartala to Udaipur in Gomati district. In addition to this road, a 30-km long road
would also be constructed from Jolaibari in South Tripura district to the Bangladesh
border.
The union minister also informed the signing of
an agreement between Bhutan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh in accordance to which
there will be road connectivity between India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.
Gadkari further added, "Now we are trying
for a road connectivity to Thailand through Myanmar."
There will be inland waterways too, developed in 101 rivers, including in the Brahmaputra, the Ganga and the Mahanadi. With these giant plans of connectivity between the states and between the neighbouring countries, the centre is hoping to increase the capacity of local contractors, engineers and other stakeholders so that they all come up and participate in building of highways and infrastructure in the north eastern region.
