At the same time, Russian fourth seed Maria Sharapova defeated Coco Vandeweghe in 6-3 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 sets. With this win of Sharapova, it is certain now that Serena and Sharapova are coming vis-a-vis.

Serena expressed her quarterfinal experience by saying, "It was really fun out there. I was smiling at one point and I saw Victoria smiling as well. We both really enjoyed it. It's been up and down, up and down, but somehow I'm still alive. I'm just happy to be here."

Another pair to face each other in the semi-finals is Agnieszka Radwanska and Garbine Muguruza.
